Well - got yelled at by my doctor. My sugars are too high. I've got two months to 1) lose weight and 2) bring the sugar level down in my blood test or he'll put me on drugs. Thrills. He also upped the dose of the appetite suppressant I was already taking - which doesn't seem to be working as well as the lower dose was?

So, I'm to avoid carbs. Bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, etc. And guess what my favorite foods are? Lasagna and pizza!! WAAAAAA!!!

It's even harder to manage when one eats out 80% of the time! I don't cook at home, and I eat out at lunch and dinner. I'm usually good for breakfast with oatmeal, but often varied that with bagels, or muffins - both of which now I shouldn't have, though oatmeal is okay. And he suggested yogurt. Yea, I like the stuff... but I can't eat it. Lactose intolerant. :::sigh:::

I'm to eat protein and veggies. Sounds like a modified South Beach diet I guess. Got any hints [livejournal.com profile] doll_paparazzi ?

And, of course, I've already failed today. There were giving out free cake for Hillcrest's 100 Anniversary - RIGHT in front of my work. I couldn't get out the front doors without getting cake put into my hands when I went out to fetch lunch. I'm doomed.

Sounds like youre heading for diabetes. You don't want that, trust me. You'd better watch the veggies too. Plenty of them have sugars ie carrots, peas, corn. Others are perfectly safe ie cucumbers, celery, brocolli, caulifour, mushrooms et all. Tomotoes can be eatern moderation. Good luck!

Yeah... honey you need to be careful! Diabeties is bad. :(

Is oatmeal ok on South Beach? I never liked the stuff... crap. I need to look it up. :( Don't worry... it's not THAT bad.

Don't sweat it too much... Don't think of having to bar ALL the good stuff!

Just try and pick heathy foods and get exercise--maybe a pedometer and find a park or a mall or something interesting to look at where you can walk, and start doing it regularly. --just go to the gym every once in a while.

With the carbs and sugars--just try and avoid them if you can, and if you can't, just keep the portion as low as possible.

But as other have said--you do NOT want to get diabetes. Then you'll have to really be harsh with your diet and have all kinds of possible nasty complications (blindness, losing body parts, heart disease, strokes--plus having to take medication and pricking yourself for blood test, going to see lots of doctors and paying for medications-- It's just NOT worth it.

And keeping yourself in better shape and more healthy is important anyway!!!

Just look at it as trying to take better care of yourself.

You'll feel better and have more energy and be saving yourself from a mess of trouble if you can just cut down on sugars and carbs a bit.

I still eat pizza and pasta, I just try to not have a ton of slices of pizza at one sitting!

Definitely try at least to have a healthier diet and exercise... It's really better that way than getting into serious health problems!!!

--Keep portion size down to about a closed-fist size of pasta or one slice of pizza--and skip having more than one portion of carbs at one meal.

You can do it!!! It's not bad.

I LOVE food--and of course it's the sugar and carbs I love the most!!! But I should have listened to my doctor who warned me that I should be careful. It totally sucks having Diabetes...

Good luck!!!

Actually--for fast weight loss, the Atkins "all meat no carb" diet seems to work. You shouldn't keep it up for a long time, for it might help in the short time you have. (I like meat--so that was OK for me.)

And you'll definitely need to walk and exercise!

It's certainly a starch and thus converts to sugar.

not totally, but oatmeal also lowers colestral, so it's okay. Though yea, I'll have to not have it every day like I've been doing.

I HAVE been doing the gym, but my doctor thinks I haven't been losing because of my metabolism, so he's also trying to help with the appetite supressant and increasing my thryoid medication some.

OK having lived with South Beach for 2 or is it 3 years here is the best advice I can give.
Don't cut out your favorite things. Just eat them way less often or smaller portions.
Breakfast: eggs, oatmeal or cream of wheat but not the pre packaged stuff and watch how much sweetner you use, the healthier cold cereals grapefruit but not things like pineapple or anything in syrup from a can.
Lunch: Salads the variety is endless. You can stil get things like a burger just ask for protien style or no bun. Chicken is your friend. If your going to have lasangna see if you can get the kind with whole wheat pasta. But be careful as most restaurants use sugar in their tomato sauces to cut the acidity.
Dinners: roast chicken and steak very easy to cook and very filling. Stay away from meatloaf or meatballs as both have fillers and usually they use bread crumbs or crackers ect... Veggies can be most yummy if cooked right.
South Beach has a line of frozen dinners that are pretty good and they will save you at lunch and dinner. All you need is a micro wave.
Call or email me and I can give you some recipes that seem to work.

This may be a downer rather than a pickmeup, but if you stay away from sugar for awhile, you'll find yourself not liking sugar very much. At least that's what happened with my grandfather. It gets easier with time.

You take better care of yourself than most people I know. I'm sure you can get through this. *HUGS*

Thanks for the hints! I'll check the frozen dinner section. Didn't know South Beach had any.
