Star Trek is AWESOME!

Awesome I tell you! Not that I was really worried. Everyone has pretty much been squeeing - all those lucky bums who got to see it before I did.
Is it worth seeing? Yes! Does it work for a long-time fan? Yes!
I just HAVE to talk about it, I do. **Spoilers! Really!**
Very enjoyable, and even though there are huge differences in some things with character development, its an AU! So, all we know happened. This is just a fork in the road. So, fine. I can deal with that. At least you are not telling us that it's the same.
Chris Pine as Kirk grew on me. I wasn't too impressed with him in some early trailers. He didn't seem to have enough Charisma. But in the movie, all together it works well. LOL on the green skinned girl he shags!
I knew Zachary Quinto was going to blow us away (and he did). He is sooo Spock. He's got the mannerisms down to a 'T'. I was originally worried Kirk would not be able to keep up with him, but their chemistry on the set worked.
The biggest surprise? Karl Urban. OMGOMGOMG! I never really was super keen on Bones in TOS. But here? OMG! The VERY FIRST MOMENT he steps on - it's gogogogogogo! Wow. The friendship been Kirk and Bones? Wonderful.
Kirk and Spock are very much working at cross purposes and antagonistic, which works and their aggression turns into respect and you can see the friendship coming.
The actors for Checkov, Sulu and Uhura were fine, and worked. I wasn't super keen on Scotty. He just didn't... work for me. He was okay, but just, not quite right.
I've heard some anti-squee grumbles - and I agree mostly with them. Every movie you always want to be better. They did not dim my enjoyment of the movie as a whole.
My ONE nitpick - THEY CHANGED THE GOD-DAMN CAR Kirk drives off the cliff!!!!!!!! Which probably makes NO difference to =anyone= else. Hell, anyone else might not even have NOTICED.
In the Trailers - the car is a 1957 Corvette. I know it's a '57, its very recognizable. My dad owned a '57! I was excited by the prospect of Kirk driving it, even if what Kirk did with it.. *cringe*.
In the movie - the car is a 1966/1967 Corvette. I assume you get the comparison they are driving into your skull with a sledgehammer? It's not as stand out as the '57. So, they give you 'money' shots of the decals, dash, lines, etc. They even have the uncle call and yell at Kirk 'It's a CLASSIC!'. And then he drives it off a cliff. Yea. I get it. Why did you have to change it? Did you realize LATER 'oh, hey, if we make this a later year....'? Or did you think if you used the '66/'67 in the trailer noobs would not recognize the car as being a classic car?

and I wish Nero would have physicaly fought a little more,I wanted to see him move around with a weapon

Date: 10 May 2009 13:06 (UTC)I also really enjoyed the retro-sixties look to the costuming--fitting in with the original series but feeling very much like Earth was just going through a nostalgic phase.
And did anyone else snicker every time the word IOWA appeared in big letters on the screen?
And Spock quoting Sherlock Holems...I just *died* (they were my two favorite fictional characters when I was growing up).
Perhaps the change of cars had to do with the fact that someone thought it would be cleverer to have the car in question be from the time period of the original series?
